Dear All,
Do you ever experience communication troubles with your autistic child?
For example do they...
* Yell, Scream, Or shout?
* Throw temper tantrums?
* Hit out at you or others?
* React unpredictably sometimes?
* Embarrass you with their behaviors when out?
* Sometimes become violent and unmanageable if a routine changes?
These problems are common and thousands of other parents, teachers and carers go thorough the same thing daily...
So How Can I Help?
Autistic Children all have different educational needs, therefore they all need various and different requirements to meet them. After your child has been assessed as to their own personal educational needs you will have a set of options.
One option could be a specialist school
one option could be to share the services already on offer to other children with learning difficulties
And another option could be main stream education with extra help.
The most important point is to ensure that the special needs of your child
are recognised and met.
Whatever option suits your child best, you can still benefit from "social skills stories"....And that's where I come in I have been writing social skill stories now for over 5 years for various organisations, schools, and parents.
What are Socail Stories?Social stories are short but descriptive pieces of text, with appropriate pictures.
The social skills story describes what people do in a specific social situation. It describes what is obvious to most of us, but not obvious to those with impaired social understanding.
The social story describes what people do, why they do it, and what common responses are.
So what is the
need for a social story?
Social stories are often used to develop appropriate behavior. The idea is to teach social understanding, not just rote compliance. To describe the situation and appropriate actions or response not to just direct.
So how do Social Stories help?
Social Stories attempt to address the "theory of mind" impairment by-giving your child some perspective on the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors of others.
Social Stories also give positive feedback to a child so that they are able to recognize their own appropriate skills and behavior. Social Stories also help teach autistic people how to cope with the possible stresses of social situations.They help the individual prepare for a new experience.
They help a child accustom themselves to a situation and to respond in the appropriate manner.They help to prevent extreme reactions that come from lack of social understanding and help provide a prompt for socially acceptable behavior.
Even if your child has little or no language, by careful observation you can determine which situations they are struggling with and an appropriate social skills story can be implemented.
Social skills stories are good in situations that the child may withdraw from, or attempts to escape from, or in which they have tantrums, cry, or become frightened.
The effectiveness of a social story should be monitored consistently.
Thanks Janine the stories are a real help to Bradley

Example social skills story
| “Why do I need to line up at school?” Sometimes I need to line up when I am at school.
I need to line up when I go to assembly, or lunchtime (add any other times your child lines up at school).
Sometimes I get excited
when I line up, this is ok, but I must remember that I need to walk in the line
and try not to push or shout at my friends. I must remember not to run
when I am lining up. If I run I might fall over, running can cause accidents. I
must walk this will make my teacher happy and make me happy too. ![]() |
Social stories work really well for children with Autism
They will often miss the
important social cues, (Tunnel vision and social interaction deficits).
Autistic people tend to dislike suprises, and will respond well to repetition.
Social stories are used as a tool for teaching and re-enforcing social
skills to children and adults with autism and related conditions.
The aim of these printable social stories is to increase your child's understanding of, and make them more comfortable in, and possibly suggest some appropriate responses for certain situations.
